Workshop: Essentials of Sustainable Packaging
Speakers
Charlotte Dreizen
Sustainable Packaging Coalition
This sneak peak of the Essentials of Sustainable Packaging course gives a tour through two of the five sections of our Core Content. First, we’ll dive into “Optimize the Design” and learn about several frameworks to think about leveraging product and packaging systems to work in harmony and different considerations to factor into packaging design for e-commerce and retail environments. Then, we’ll examine how to “Design for Recovery” and explore best practices for designing packaging so it’s capable of being effectively collected, sorted, reprocessed, and sold to an end market. These compelling topics give an introduction to the full material of the Essentials of Sustainable Packaging that traverses three other sections including “Why Packaging” is important to the circular economy and sustainability strategy, “Source Sustainably” that looks at best practices for sourcing virgin and recycled materials, as well as “Planetary Boundaries” which zooms out to understand how we can ensure packaging is resilient in the Great Acceleration. Join us for a sample of the Essentials of Sustainable Packaging’s dynamic content and get full access for you and your colleagues through the new online Essentials of Sustainable Packaging course, available to SPC member companies at a discounted rate.

Masterclass: Championing Sustainability in Challenging Times
Speakers
Margo Mosher
SustainAbility
SustainAbility will present a masterclass on the business case for sustainability. We will explore how sustainability drives value creation in today’s business environment, including a closer look at connections to trust and reputation.
In an interactive session we will explore the following questions: How does a strategic focus on environmental and social performance create business value? We’ll explore how sustainability relates to market opportunities, customer expectations, employee attraction and retention and investor engagement. What examples of businesses creating triple bottom line value can we learn from? What business attributes are critical to driving sustainability and business success? We will also explore how to better communicate the business case for sustainability to your colleagues and senior leadership. We will discuss tools and resources available, examples of how sustainability practitioners have framed and communicated sustainability and what approaches have been successful. We will explore how practitioners have used competitive peer assessments, data points related to customer interest, investor requests and and employee engagement opportunities to ‘sell’ sustainability to their senior management. We will also explore how the business value of sustainability varies across sectors and how practitioners can communicate its value depending on their sector. Finally we will discuss how sustainability can be integrated into existing strategies, priorities and department priorities, helping to embed sustainability and make the case for further investment.

Fabricating the Future With Living Technology
Speakers
Natsai Audrey Chieza
Faber Futures
Over 3.8 billion years, biology has evolved to rapidly prototype, recycle and replenish better than any system ever engineered by humans. What if we could harness the inherent intelligence of nature to make things from living systems? Emerging technologies such as synthetic biology are enabling the at-scale implementation of industrial processes in which living organisms can be designed to demonstrate specific behaviours or produce specified high-performance materials. By leveraging advanced tools for biological engineering and industrial fermentation, we can radically change how we design, fabricate, distribute and experience materials, products and services – ranging from food and clothing to packaging and our physical environment. Chieza’s talk is an exploration of how the convergence of of DNA-scale engineering with the methods and principles of design thinking are enabling us to create novel interventions and meaningful value towards circular material flows.
