Successful Collaboration for Front of House Food Waste Collection Programs – Speed Dating Workshop
Every stakeholder in the composting supply chain has a particular perspective on where efficiencies can be made in the composting supply chain and the best places to leverage compostable packaging and food serviceware. Let’s apply design thinking to the composting and compostable packaging relationship and speed date through different scenarios to problem solve.
Composters and Packaging Producers: Symbiotic Manufacturers
While both compostable packaging producers and composters are manufacturers in the same supply chain, compostable packaging manufacturers are particularly dependent on the operations and existence of compost manufacturers. Despite this significant reliance, the challenges that each manufacturer faces are often discussed in isolation. A panel of stakeholders from both manufacturing sectors unpack the opportunities that the industry can gain from deep collaboration and forging a circular economy.

Speakers
Eda Englund
Asia Pulp & Paper
Sustainability is more important to consumers than it has ever been. In fact, according to new research from Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP), 50 percent of consumers say sustainability of paper-based packaging is more important today than it was five years ago. And when it comes to food packaging specifically, biodegradable food packaging attributes are viewed just as important as recyclability and overall sustainability. Within the food industry, many packaging items require a barrier coating that can make recycling a challenge. This beckons the need for brands to offer alternative sustainable choices for consumers – and thanks to advances in technology, biodegradable packaging is one solution.
In this presentation, APP will provide an overview of the environmental issues facing the paper industry today in addition to a discussion on: Responsible consumption; Recycled and virgin paper use and Paper packaging design for end of life.

Think Venn Diagrams – You have the world of plastics on one side, you have the world of paper on the other. What happens when you have a natural, renewable, and innovative material that stands in that gap? A paper that can be 3D cold formed in many ways similar to a plastic. A paper that can be run on many of the machines that typically run plastic. A paper that can be 3D formed with lower energy and without melting and cooling. A paper that can be pre-printed and run on a wide web, continuous high-speed converting line. A paper that can be partnered with bio-poly for advanced laminate systems. That paper is here now — Fibreform. Come learn about this exciting technology break-through, hear what we have done with this material, and then let’s have an engaging conversation on what we can do together with this novel innovation.

In this session, attendees will be given a data-rich session first looking at just how much paper and paper products are captured in the recycling cart … and left in the trash can. Then, a broad-based look at the recovered fiber landscape — what is being produced, what are the markets like and what will happen to all of it if China closes its doors. Lastly, we will look at recovered fiber and how it moves (and doesn’t) flow from through materials recovery facilities (MRFs). What are the challenging materials and how can they be smoothed out?

Forests in Focus: Innovation in Sustainability Assessment
Speakers
Tom Pollock
Sustainable Packaging Coalition
In order to meet rising expectations, companies are working harder than ever to understand and mitigate the potential risks associated with forest product supply chains. Many leaders in the sustainability space are going beyond that, and are looking for ways in which their supply chains are able to not only “do no harm,” but support and expand forest conservation and forest health. Brands, retailers and their suppliers use a variety of tools to address forest sustainability issues, including but not limited to forest certification, controlled wood risk assessments, and certified fiber sourcing. These tools have proven enormously successful. However, gaps remain, particularly in areas, such as the southeastern U.S., where individuals and families own 56% of the forested land, and where over 50% of wood fiber comes from such properties. For several reasons, engagement of this demographic in forest certification and similar sustainability programming remains relatively low. To bridge these gaps, we need tools that give a more comprehensive picture of the sustainability of forested landscapes and highlight the opportunities to create meaningful, measurable change on-the-ground. GreenBlue’s Forest Products Working Group (FPWG) and the American Forest Foundation have developed a tool – Forests In Focus – to answer these questions: how do we reach and engage family woodland owners, the majority of whom are not certified, to ensure they are connected to the resources and professionals needed to manage their forests sustainably? How can we know that on-the-ground forest management rolls up to sustainability at the landscape level? And, finally, how do we utilize the power of forest supply chains to work with forest landowners to create positive, measurable change on issues of conservation importance?

Speakers
Dale Gubbels
Firstart Fiber Corporation
Dale Gubbels, president and CEO of Firstar Fiber, Inc., will be speak about the innovative Hefty Energy Bag Program, which the Omaha recycling company launched in September 2016. The program was developed by Dow Chemical to recover currently unrecyclable plastics as a source of energy. Dow initially provided 6,500 households with a roll of 20 orange bags along with instructions to use the bags to capture everything from candy wrappers, potato chip bags, straws and much more. Gubbels will explain what motivated his company to be the first in the nation to permanently add the program to its material recovery facility (MRF) and how it has become an integral component of the curbside recycling services offered throughout the Omaha metropolitan area. He will also explain why he believes the Hefty Energy Bag will be adopted by other MRFs and communities for its potential to reduce contamination and excite residents to more fully embrace the recycling habit.
