Tyler Matusevich

Bio

Tyler received his B.S. in Packaging Science and a M.S. in Natural Resources from Virginia Tech in 2013 and 2015 respectively. He held multiple internships ranging packaging engineering, design, testing, and was a TA for the intro packaging course. Upon graduating, Tyler worked at UPM Raflatac for 5+ years as a Sustainability Manager for the Americas region, leading their efforts towards a future beyond fossils. Tyler then had a stopover with Digimarc, who’s digital watermarking technology is making a big splash in the high-profile project ‘Holy Grail’ in Europe. Since August of 2021, Tyler has been the Sustainability Director at Brook + Whittle where he works to ensure sustainability is a part of everyone’s job to build sustainability into the fabric of the organization. In this cross-functional role, he develops Brook + Whittle’s sustainability vision and strategy, product innovation, environmental improvements in operations and supply chain, strategic partnerships with organizations and suppliers, and works closely with sales and marketing. Tyler has recently begun co-chairing the label work group within the Association of Plastic Recyclers and serves on multiple industry committees to drive the label and flexible packaging industry towards a more sustainable future.

Why do you want to serve on the Executive Committee?

I’ve followed GreenBlue and the SPC since my packaging science studies over a decade ago and have participated in SPC events and collaboratives for the past 7 years. I’ve always been and will continue to be an advocate of the knowledge and vitally important work the SPC and its members bring to the table. Two events I never miss every year are SPC Impact and Advance – it’s the leading sustainable packaging group that covers the entire supply chain which makes it a must to be involved in this collaborative landscape. I relish the opportunity to serve on the Executive Committee and contribute to the mission.

What do you think you would contribute as an Executive Committee representative?

Working at Brook + Whittle as Sustainability Director, I get to work across the business both internally driving sustainability programs and product innovation, but perhaps more importantly working with our broad customer base of the world’s leading CPG companies as well as small to mid-size brands, many of which are SPC members themselves. I am active with various external partners and work groups including the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) where I have recently begun co-chairing the newest label work group, Circular Economy for Labels (CELAB) North America, and the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute (TLMI) in which I participate in the sustainability committee and regulatory affairs, matrix waste, and release liner sub-committees. Throughout my career, I’ve participated in various design for recycling or reuse, circular economy, closed-loop, byproduct end-market development, strategy, ESG, and net-zero projects to drive the companies I’ve worked for, but more importantly the label and flexible packaging industry towards a more sustainable future. I plan to bring those experiences, relationships, and dedication to the SPC Executive Committee!
