Peter Swaine
Seventh Generation
Peter Swaine is the Director of Packaging Development at Seventh Generation, one of the country’s first self-declared socially responsible companies. The 25-year-old company derives its name from the Great Law of the Iroquois that states, “In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.” Peter joined Seventh Generation in 2002 where his passion for environmental stewardship was started. He has been developing a packaging line that reflects the strong sustainability philosophy of his company: “A world without packaging litter, where no packaging goes to waste, and where
materials are made from renewed resources and are themselves renewed.” Examples of his influential packaging accomplishments have been a plastic bottle line using the highest level of PCR in the industry and the launch of the first laundry detergent products using bottles constructed from compostable molded pulp. Seventh Generation is a founding member of the SPC’s How2Recycle project, which resulted in the spring 2013 launch of many Seventh Generation product lines using the new label. Before Seventh Generation, Peter was Director of Corporate Procurement for the Maytag Food Service Equipment Group. He holds a BA from Kenyon College.
