Bio

Doug has spent his 30 year plus career in the flexible packaging industry, either as a manufacturer/supplier or as an end user. His path began pursuing a Material Engineering degree from NC State, focusing on plastics. After graduating, he got a job at Printpack in Atlanta with their coextrusion division, making multilayer coex films for the boil-in-bag and processed meat markets. He then got a job at Eagle Snacks as the Packaging Manager, supporting production at their seven plants while working with Anheuser-Bush purchasing on specifications for folding carton, corrugated and packaging films. After taking a similar position with the Lance, he took an opportunity with Sonoco Flexibles as a Technical Account Manager, supporting several different food customers. Aplix offered him the opportunity to be the Product Manager for a “new zipper” option for flexible packaging. It was during this time when recycling, source reduction and sustainability topics became a focus for the food packaging industry. All during his career, he has realized the importance of understanding the entire packaging circle – design, cost, functionality, and end of life. As part of the SPC, I strive to further enable a circular economy for packaging materials.

Why do you want to serve on the Executive Committee?

I want to increase my awareness and involvement in the SPC and help keep my company in the loop with SPC activities.

What do you think you would contribute as an Executive Committee representative?

Aplix supplies all-polyethylene zippers for flexible packaging applications. As the SPC grows, I want to represent the “component side” of flexible packaging in companies sustainable efforts. My 30+ years in flexible packaging has provided a diverse perspective on the supply, equipment and end use of flexible packaging.
