Doug currently holds the position of Industrial Sector Leader – Bioproducts for FPInnovations. FPInnovations is a leader in developing novel technologies to produce bio-sourced products made from trees, including cellulose fibres, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose filaments, lignin, and other materials. The combination of industrial and research experience at FPInnovations has uniquely positioned Doug to understand the needs and drivers of both large and small companies that work in this space.
He has worked on or managed projects focussed on economics and technical assessment of biorefineries in the forest sector, bioenergy and biofuels, energy management in pulp & paper mills, corrosion and materials selection in the bioproducts and pulp and paper industry, and process control and systems closure in pulp and paper mills. He has authored or co-authored more than 60 external publications and papers and developed significant collaborative activities with organizations like CanmetENERGY, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Institute of Paper Science and Technology (Renewable Bioproducts Institute), VTT, and Sandvik Materials Technology. He holds a BSc in Chemistry and an MSc in Metallurgy, both from UBC. He has served as chair of the TAPPI Engineering Division and was appointed a Fellow of NACE International In 2009.
