GreenBlue is pleased to announce that Kaleigh Nicastro has joined the team as a Project Associate with the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, focused on How2Recycle. Kaleigh earned her MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware and her BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Carolina.
What inspired you to work in the sustainability field?
From an early age, my parents instilled in me a desire to leave the world a better place than the way I found it. I grew up learning to be conscious of my impact on the people and environment around me through volunteer work. In undergrad, I stumbled into doing research in sustainable plastics; after that, I was hooked. I was excited to find a way to still pursue research in plastics, but remain focused on not destroying the planet. I decided to pursue a graduate degree focused on the development of sustainable, bio-based alternatives to styrene and bisphenol A (BPA). I am excited to apply what I have learned in the lab to make the most impact globally.
What do you hope to achieve at GreenBlue?
With an academic background in the synthesis and characterization of polymers and sustainable materials, I want to put my materials knowledge to good use here at GreenBlue. Working in a lab, I know how important it is to limit personal exposure to hazardous chemicals and purposefully choose less toxic substitutes. I hope to help companies strategically choose packaging designed to be recycled or reused, which will also prevent long term toxicological effects and contamination of our ecosystems.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Find new adventures. I love exploring new things, whether it’s food, an activity, or a new place. Although, I wouldn’t say no to a good nap either.
Happiness is….
being outside in the sun, preferably near a beach.
