Sandra is a professor in the Communication Design Pathways Department at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York City, and is the Coordinator for the Packaging Design BFA Program. She has been instrumental in developing curriculum using design thinking, and teaches a number of courses that focus on the holistic creative process of design with sustainability as an integral component. In her advocacy for sustainability, she organized FIT’s Annual Sustainable Business and Design Conference until 2016. Now celebrating its twelfth year, the conference champions the value of aligning business strategy with sustainable design. She has received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the FIT Faculty Excellence Award.

With over twenty-five years of brand and packaging design experience, Sandra started her career in Chicago working for a leading packaging design firm that specialized in proprietary structure development. She moved to New York City to launch the firm’s east coast office and served as the creative director where she managed the development of brand and packaging design for new and existing brands for clients including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Frito Lay, Gillette, Kraft, M&M Mars, Pillsbury, Quaker Oats, Seagram’s and S.C. Johnson.

She started her own firm providing brand strategy, brand and product repositioning, packaging design, and marketing for consumer products and service companies, and then was a managing partner of DesignPracticum. She continues to consult teaching organizations how to use design thinking and methodology, and design management to broaden their creative capabilities and strengthen their competitive advantage. She is co-author of Packaging Design: Successful Product Branding from Concept to Shelf that is widely used as a text for introductory packaging design courses. She also writes for trade journals, presents at industry conferences, participates on educational and professional panels, and is a judge for industry competitions.
